New York Nurse Practitioner Programs
Nurse Practitioner Education Requirements in New York State
To become a licensed Nurse Practitioner in the state of New York, you must fulfill several requirements. The criteria listed below comes directly from the New York State Education Department.
- You must be licensed as a professional registered nurse (RN) in New York State
- You must satisfy the educational requirements to become certified. In order to do this, you must complete a Master’s in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners Program that is registered by the New York State Education Department as a qualifying program. If your program is not registered by the state, you can still meet the education criteria by providing documentation to the board that the program you graduated from was designed to prepare you to practice a a nurse practitioner. In doing so, it can be deemed as equivalent to those that are registered by the state. You may contact the New York State Nurses Association at www.nysa.org to learn more about what type of documentation you may need.
- To become certified as a nurse practitioner in New York, you need to complete at least 3 semester hours in pharmacology. Coursework must include instruction on drug management in patients and instruction on the state laws and regulations in regards to documenting and prescribing medications.
If you are already a licensed Nurse Practitioner in another state, you will be eligible to practice in New York if you are certified as a nurse practitioner by any one of the following national organizations:
- American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
- Pediatric Nursing Certification Board
- American Nurses Credentialing Center
- National Certification Corporation
- Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation
In addition, you may still need to complete the pharmacotherapeutics
requirement in some form if the courses you previously took didn’t include instruction of New York laws and regulations in regards to documenting and prescribing medications.
