Licensed Practical Nurse Programs in New Mexico

LPN programs and licensing in New Mexico are regulated by the New Mexico Board of Nursing. To become an LPN in New Mexico you will need to successfully complete a New Mexico Board of Nursing approved LPN program and then pass the NCLEX-PN licensure exam. A sample of what type of curriculum an LPN student may encounter in an LPN program includes learning to take vital signs and patient history, developing patient care goals, how to order and administer medications, assisting in medical procedures, CPR and many other skills that prepare the student for the licensure exam and employment in the community as an LPN.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in New Mexico work closely with Registered Nurses, Physicians, CNAs and other health care providers to care for patients in a variety of health care settings. LPNs in New Mexico are found working in Long Term Care and rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, home health care agencies, correctional facilities and other health care related facilities. An LPN in New Mexico may work with physicians and Registered Nurses to develop and manage care plans for their patients, instruct patients and their family members in the proper treatment procedures, help patents improve and maintain their health and in some situations the LPN may supervise the nursing activities performed by a CNA. The New Mexico Department of Labor – LASER website provides job growth projection data and their projections have job growth through 2018 for LPNs pegged at 16.3% in Northern New Mexico, 4.6% in Central New Mexico, 7.8% in Eastern New Mexico and 5.6% in Southwestern New Mexico. All these projections are positive and considered above average job growth. Much is dependent on how the economy actually rebounds and how health care reform impacts the state of New Mexico.
