Nurse Aide Training Programs in Kentucky
In the state of Kentucky Nurse Aides are often referred to as Certified Nurse Aides (CNA), however, the correct title for this profession is State Registered Nurse Aide (SRNA). To become a State Registered Nurse Aide in Kentucky there are three steps.
CNA Training in Kentucky
The first step is to find and complete a state approved Nurse Aide training. These programs are offered at career and technical training centers, long-term care facilities, community colleges, the American Red Cross and some other facilities around the state of Kentucky. A list of the Louisville and Lexington facilities offering Nurse Aide training classes can be found below along with contact information for Kentucky Healthy Choices, who can provide additional information for other areas of the state.
The approved Nurse Aide training programs in Kentucky are required to be a minimum of 75 clock hours in duration with at least 16 hours spent in a supervised clinical training environment. The Nurse Aide classes are designed to prepare students for the state required competency exam for Nurse Aides as well as for professional practice as an SRNA in hospitals, home health care, medical offices, assisted living facilities, hospice, long-term care facilities and mental health facilities. Online Nurse Aide training programs are also offered and approved by the state. The American Red Cross in Kentucky offers one such online option in addition to their classroom based program. CNA Exam in Kentucky
The second step is to successfully pass the Kentucky Nurse Aide competency evaluation/exam. This is a two part exam, a written component and a skills evaluation component. The Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS) is the only provider of Nurse Aide testing in the state (Contact: 877-528-2748).
Getting Listed on the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry
The third step is to be listed on the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry. The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services in association with the Kentucky Board of Nursing maintains the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry. After successfully passing the competency exam/evaluation, Nurse Aides are added to the Registry and eligible to use the title State Registered Nurse Aide (SRNA).
The CNA or SRNA position is often a stepping stone to other positions in the health care field, such as a Registered Nurse, a Licensed Practical Nurse or a health care administrator. In fact, the admissions requirements for the Bluegrass Community & Technical College system registered nursing and licensed practical nursing programs include proof of active status on the State Nurse Aide Registry or documentation of successful completion of a minimum 75 hour nursing assistant course within the last three years. This requirement must be satisfied prior to enrolling in the first nursing class. This means that if you are interested in pursuing a nursing career in Kentucky you will need to complete an approved Nurse Aide training. Learn more about LPN programs in Kentucky.
