- Featured Utah Nursing Schools
Utah nursing schools have not been immune to the nursing faculty shortage impacting the rest of the country. The nursing schools in Utah have so many applicants they are having to turn away or waitlist two to three for every one that they accept. Without the faculty there is no way to admit or graduate more students which in turn has the potential to compound the Utah nursing shortage. A 2002 survey found that since 1995, nursing bachelor-level graduate rates have fallen 23 percent. This can be primarily attributed to the lack of faculty available to teach advanced nursing degree programs and the waitlists that have been created as a result.
Nursing organizations in Utah as well as across the country are working diligently to find ways to fix this problem. There are many new plans in place and as we slowly begin to exit from an economic recession we will start to see the impact these strategies will have. In addition, we will begin to see job openings increase significantly as older nurses decide to actually retire or go back into retirement. If you are at all considering nursing as a career, it would be worthwhile to read more about nursing in Utah in How to Become a Nurse in Utah.
Since this data was released the economy has shifted and what was once a nursing shortage has become less of one, but for reasons that had been previously unforeseen. As the recession took hold and thousands of Utah residents lost jobs, hospitals began to make cutbacks, retired nurses returned to work full and part time and those nurses who were supposed to be retiring decided to stay in their positions until the economy turns. All of the sudden there weren’t as many jobs for nursing school graduates in Utah. Money had been given to Utah nursing schools to create more slots for enrolling additional students and now these graduates are finding it difficult to find jobs.
The media attention around this scenario has been widespread. Many of the nursing organizations as well as nursing schools in the state do feel that times will rebound and their will be a great need for nurses once again. As economic momentum shifts to the positive, those nurses who had been considering retirement will retire and those who had come out of retirement will return to retirement and when the health care reform takes affect in 2014 there will be many more people with health insurance and seeking health care throughout the state of Utah. All these factors point toward there being a strong demand for registered and licensed practical nurses statewide.

Online nursing programs are helping to progress the field of nursing in Utah.
