Registered Long-Term Care Nurse Aide Training in WV
Nursing Assistant classes/training in West Virginia are offered through community colleges, nursing homes, high schools as well as some other facilities and agencies. The West Virginia Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification – Long-term Care Nursing Assistant Program Office (304-558-0050) recommends contacting nursing homes in your area to inquire if they offer a Nursing Assistant training program and if that program is state approved. The first step toward becoming a Nursing Assistant in West Virginia is to complete a training program. State approved training programs are a minimum of 120 clock hours with a minimum of 65 hours spent on classroom instruction and a minimum of 55 hours spent on clinical training in a Medicare or Medicaid facility. Classroom instruction generally covers basic nursing skills, CPR, communication and interpersonal skills, safety/emergency procedures, Infection control, promoting resident’s independence and respecting resident’s rights, personal care skills, basic restorative services, rights of clients and cognitive impairment/dementias education. Facilities that offer employment on the first day of training or within the first 12 months of completing a Nursing Assistant training are required to reimburse the student/employee for the program and competency exam costs incurred. If the employee or student completed their Nursing Assistant training through a non-facility based program like a community college, the first certified nursing facility to hire them within 12 months of completion must reimburse the employee for the costs of that program and the competency exam.*

In the state of West Virginia students are not required to have a high school diploma or GED to enroll in a Nursing Assistant program. Some facilities may have education requirements for employment, so it is recommended that you contact potential employers to verify their requirements prior to not completing a high school education or GED. Additional eligibility criteria for becoming a Nursing Assistant include: one must not be a registered sex offender, not be committed of a crime involving a child or an incapacitated adult and must not be listed on an abuse registry in any state.**
