Education and Additional Requirements for Nurse Practitioners in California
1) Nurse practitioners in California are required to have completed a nurse practitioner master’s degree in nursing program as well as have an active California RN license. The nurse practitioner master’s degree program must conform to the California State Board of Registered Nursing’s “Standards of Education for Nurse Practitioner Programs” in the California Code of Regulations Section 1484.
There are two other ways to meet the application requirements for a nurse practitioner or NP in the State of California. Each also requires an active California RN License.
1) Certification from a national organization or association such as the AANP, ANCC, NCBPNP&N, NAPNAP, or the NCC. Must send in verification of certification by one of these organizations or associations with the application. Must submit a verification that a nurse practitioner program was completed. Transcripts from the nurse practitioner program must be submitted by the institution where program was attended.
2) If the nurse practitioner program taken does not meet the standards set by the California State Board of Registered Nursing then the following steps should be taken. Verification form that a nurse practitioner program was completed, transcripts and course descriptions must be submitted, the clinical competency form must be submitted by the nurse practitioner as well as by the physician, and a clinical experience form must be submitted by either the physician or the nurse practitioner.

The Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science baccalaureate and master’s programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Students that complete the pre-licensure component of the master’s program are eligible to apply for licensure by the Board of Registered Nursing. The master’s clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner programs are approved by the Board of Registered Nursing.
