Scholarships for Nursing Students in New York

In populous New York, you see a little bit of everything — and you also find a lot of niche nursing scholarships. If you are at the beginning stages of your education, you might use a need-based Pell Grant or a general award that you earned for excellence in high school. Other options include school-based scholarships, work service scholarships, and awards where eligibility is based on group membership. As you pursue higher levels of education, you will find additional opportunities in your area of specialty.

Nursing Scholarship Requirements – NY

Loan scholarships finance your education in return for a work commitment. One such program is the Mount Sinai Hospital competition which is open to BSN students in the last year of their program. To be eligible, candidates must have maintained at least a 3.25 grade point average. Some experience in the healthcare field is desired, though not necessarily mandated. Expect to turn in a resume, transcript, and faculty recommendation. The application process also includes an interview — not surprising, since you may be their future employee. The deadline is October 1.

Some scholarships are specifically for students in specialty areas. The NYS ID/DD Nurses Association awards the NYSMRDDNA Scholarship to one outstanding nursing student in an RN or LPN to RN program. In order to be considered, you must have experience working with individuals with developmental delays or mental retardation. You will need to turn in a resume and a 500 word essay describing your future goals.

The New York Association of School Nurses also has a $1,000 niche scholarship competition, the Charlotte Grace Memorial Scholarship. This one is open only to school nurses. Applicants should be enrolled in a baccalaureate or master’s program. As a potential recipient, you will address several questions in writing. The process entails detailing your educational and employment history, work philosophy, and activities. Applications should be turned in by October 15.

The Edna A. Lauterback Scholarship is for a nurse at the LPN level or higher who has entrepreneurial skills and is interested in developing a home- or community-based business. Amounts are variable — if you decide to go for the award, tell the committee your aspirations and they’ll consider helping you. Applications are due June 1.

Your ethnicity may qualify you for additional scholarship competitions. NAHN-NY (the National Association of Hispanic Nurses New York Chapter) makes awards to nursing students from the LPN level to the baccalaureate level, but applicants must be members.

Nursing Scholarship Professional Tips – NY

If you apply for a loan scholarship, you are approaching the organization as a future employee. It’s good to spend some time brushing up on your technique and preparing for common questions. The Nursing Students Association of New York State provides resources on their site for tackling those difficult but deal-making interview questions. They note that a “Tell me about yourself” question is designed to elicit information about your professional life, and that you might recount the highlights of your academic journey.

Sometimes it is appropriate to discuss your personal hardships in a scholarship essay. It is important to know your audience and keep in mind the purpose of the award. It won’t hurt to give some attention to style, as well. Exceptional Nurses notes that it can be effective to weave a personal story into the essay, but not to make it the whole essay.
