Scholarships for Nursing Students in Kansas

Between 2008 and 2018, Kansas is expected to see a 22% increase in demand for registered nurses. That poses a bit of a challenge for the state’s hospitals and other healthcare facilities. They, in cooperation with the government, have put in place a very creative loan scholarship program. It is called a loan scholarship because, if you don’t fulfill a specific work commitment, you will have to repay it with cash, much like a standard student loan.

If this type of program isn’t for you, there are other scholarship programs which will pay a portion of your education if they see you as one of the most deserving candidates.

Nursing Scholarship Requirements in Kansas

Kansas’ loan scholarship program is available to students studying to become LPNs or RNs. The program is a little different than those in some other states. As a potential scholarship recipient, you need to find yourself a sponsor. That means you need to locate a future employer who’s willing to pay part of your scholarship; the remainder will be paid by the government. If you are enrolled in an LPN program, you are eligible to receive $2,500 a year; if you are working toward RN certification, you can receive $3,500. After your education is complete, you are expected to work for your sponsor for a period of time that equals your sponsorship.

Pre-licensure nursing students (LPN or RN) can also look into the Kansas State Board or Nursing Scholarship program. KNBNS awards are $1,000. If you write well, this is your chance to shine — moneys are awarded on the basis of an essay. The 2010 essay topic was the contribution of nursing to healthcare. Look for details for upcoming contests to be posted on the site of the Kansas Board.

The Kansas Nurses Foundation is another source of financial assistance. It offers managed and endowed scholarships for professional nurses at different stages of their careers. All require a GPA of at least 3.0 and submission of a personal statement. Other requirements vary by donor. The Morgan Sanders Endowed Scholarship, a $500 award, gives first priority to students in RN to BSN programs. The George Devane CRNA Endowed Scholarship Fund, worth $1,000, is open only to graduate students studying to become nurse anesthetists.

Nursing Scholarship Professional Advice – KS

In addition to the state competitions above, there are many competitions open to nursing students from across the nation. They’re not all looking for quite the same things. Find scholarship opportunities that will allow you to capitalize on your unique strengths.

Some committees, like the Kansas State Board of Nursing, publish detailed criteria and/or tell you just what they’re looking for in an essay. The Board is looking for some of the same things many of our English teachers do: a five paragraph (maximum) essay with originality and focus, good sentence structure, and proper use of conventions. The Board has shared point values for different objectives. Using the introduction to capture the reader’s attention and introduce the main idea is worth up to five points.

Other competitions judge candidates on a wide variety of criteria. One minority fund has shared that it’s important to realize that there are many criteria and not to get too hung up on areas where you’re not perfect — the most fundamental thing is to turn in everything that’s required. Some competitions include an interview in addition to written materials. People skills are fundamental to the profession, and, for some, this interview is a big opportunity. If you’re looking for a sponsor for the Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship, your people skills will prove an asset here as well.
