Scholarships for Nursing Students in Maine

Interested in becoming a nurse in Maine? If you’re passionate about the profession, the state can use you! Maine is expected to see a 16% increase in demand for registered nurses during the 2008 to 2018 decade. If you’re not only passionate but proactive, you may be able to win a scholarship. Nursing scholarships are offered through state and community foundations, schools, and medical centers.

There is a particular need for nurses with advanced training. Because NPs are able to offer primary care in underserved areas, the government ultimately repays some educational loans. If you are in an NP program, you may want to consider both state and national programs.

Maine Nursing Scholarship Requirements

The OMNE Nursing Leaders of Maine Scholarship is a $500 award for students studying at the BSN or MSN level. The application window is January 1st to May 1st. If you decide to compete for the award, your application should include enrollment confirmation, transcript, references, and a brief note explaining how the scholarship could help you in your endeavors.

The American Nurses Association – Maine also awards ($250 to $500) scholarships to nursing students. To be eligible, you must be a member of your school’s nursing organization. You must send an application letter and letter of reference by March 20.

If you are a resident of Kitery, Elliot, or York, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Foundation for Seacoast Health. The Steven Cutter Award is awarded to an undergraduate enrolled in a healthcare program, while the Edwina Foye Award is for a graduate student. This competition favors those with academic excellence. A number of other factors are considered including work and community experience, personal essay, and professional goals. Special consideration is given to NPs and others who may provide primary care in high needs areas. You must turn in test scores (SAT, ACT, NLN, or GRE) and students assessment forms. Materials are due March 1st.

Hospitals and long term care facilities can also be a scholarship source, particularly if you have worked for them as an employee or in a volunteer capacity. The Friends of Maine Medical Center awards scholarships to their junior volunteers and to others enrolled in health programs affiliated with Maine Medical Center. The Maine Health Care Association also makes scholarship awards to volunteers and to employees and their immediate family members. The Mike McNeil Scholarship Fund is specifically for those with experience in long term care. The application includes three essay questions, each to be answered in 200 words or less. Applications are due August 1st.

There are additional opportunities for graduate level nursing students. If you have to take out a loan to complete you nurse practitioner or nurse midwife training, you may be able to get the loan forgiven by working in a health professional shortage area.

Nursing Scholarship Expert Advice

How can you make yourself more competitive? It depends on what stage you are in your education. If you are at an early stage, you might want to add to your experience by job shadowing or volunteering. Scholarship committees want to know that you are dedicated to the field. To be truly dedicated, you need to have some sense of the day to day struggles as well as the rewards. Some hospitals do reward their most dedicated and promising long term volunteers with scholarships. However, even if that doesn’t happen, the experience can make future applications stand out and give you material for essays.

If you’re at a later stage in your education, work on making your application as thorough as possible. A surprising number of students are disqualified from competitions due to missing information. Even sending in an unofficial transcript instead of an official one can disqualify you from some competitions.
