Alabama Nursing Job Outlook and Salaries
The United States is facing a dramatic shortage of nurses in the coming decade and Alabama is no exception. In fact, the Southeastern part of the country is already feeling the impact of the shortage of registered nurses. The Department of Health and Human Services cited reports predicting the U.S. nursing shortage would grow to 29 percent by 2020, compared to a 6 percent shortage in 2000.
Though this news sounds depressing, the upside is that there are registered nurse job openings all over Alabama in all fields of nursing. Hospitals, home health companies and doctor offices are now offering flexible schedules, educational benefits, higher pay and other benefits to retain their staff and to recruit qualified registered nurses in all areas of Alabama. Some hospitals are offering $10,000 sign on bonuses to registered nurses in Alabama.
Nursing salaries at Alabama hospitals are in the $18.00 to $19.00/ hour range for registered nurses with a two year degree. Those with a BSN and more advanced degrees will earn more.
