Some of the most well known and oldest nursing schools in the country are located in the state of New York including Columbia University School of Nursing founded in 1892, the University of Buffalo founded in 1936 and D’Youville College School of Nursing which has been educating nurses since 1942. At the entry to nursing level there are a few critical items to assess prior to applying and enrolling in any LPN or RN nursing program in New York. These include 1) Make sure the program is recognized by the New York State Education Department to ensure it is not a fraudulent program and that upon completion of the program you will be eligible to sit for, depending on your path, the NCLEX-PN or the NCLEX-RN exams for state licensure. 2) The program should be accredited by the CCNE or NLNAC. This is important at all levels and especially at the Master’s and higher, since national certifications in the advanced practice and other fields require graduation from an accredited program for eligibility to sit for the certification exams. 3) You may also want to consider the schools NCLEX exam pass rates, which can be found on the New York State Education Department website. This can be a useful tool to gauge how well a program has historically prepared its students, but can’t be an indication as to the quality of the program as there are many extenuating circumstances that can affect the pass rates. 4)This applies more once you have selected a nursing school in New York, apply to any and all financial aid options you are eligible for even if you don’t think you will win the competition for one, you never know.
