Minnesota nursing schools are graduating some of the most sought after nurses in the country. Unfortunately, the Minnesota nursing schools aren’t graduating enough of them. This has created the largest nursing shortage the state of Minnesota has ever seen and it is projected to get worse.
With the economic recession there was an easing of the shortage as veteran nurses stayed in their positions well past their intended retirement dates and those nurses in retirement decided to comeback out to supplement their incomes. This caused a huge backlash as new graduate nurses began to have a difficult time finding job openings. Though times are tough, the economy will improve and nursing will be set for another round of shortages, potentially greater than the first time around. This is all meant to encourage people to continue to pursue their goals in nursing. To learn more about this and pre-licensure nursing requirements, check out the article Become a Nurse in Minnesota.
Online Nursing Schools in Minnesota
This site is working to help meet the demand for qualified nurses in the state of Minnesota by offering online nursing programs through CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) accredited nursing schools. Nursing programs in Minnesota have become increasingly competitive and many times they turn away hundreds of qualified applicants each year. As more and more hospitals seek to fill RN vacancies with highly educated nurses holding baccalaureate degrees in nursing the impact on nursing programs continues to worsen. Our solution is for those registered nurses seeking an advanced degree is to pursue it online. These schools offer LPN to BSN, RN to BSN, RN to MSN, and many MSN programs with different specialties. There are many benefits to an online nursing program including the flexibility to balance your career and classes and the fact that online nursing program cost per credit is comparable to campus based nursing programs in Minnesota.
Minnesota Nursing Job Outlook and Salary Information
The Minnesota nursing shortage has created an opportunity for current nurses and potential nurses. With the increasing demand for registered nurses, primarily those with advanced education (BSN or MSN), nurses are able to choose their career path, specialization and name their price. With the future job security created by the projected demand for nurses, there hasn’t been a better time to start or advance your career in nursing.
According to Roxanne Wilson, director of educational resources for St. Cloud Hospital, “The need for nurses is particularly acute in our region and especially in the rural areas,” “We hire about 50 registered nurses each year, but we could hire 100 to 150 throughout the year if qualified applicants were available. Nurses are fairly mobile, and we have our best retention success with nurses who are originally from central Minnesota.”
Salary.com reports that the median annual salary for a staff nurse (RM) in Duluth is $58,891, in Minneapolis/St. Paul is $63,015, in Rochester is $60,562, in St. Cloud is $57,688. As you can see nursing salaries in Michigan will vary by location as well as by experience and specialization.
According to the the 1999, 2000 and 2001 Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey, the average hourly wage for nursing aides, orderlies and attendants was $11.16 in MN and in the Twin Cities $12.27, well above the national average of $9.79. LPNs earned an average hourly wage of $15.23 in MN and $16.45 in the Twin Cities, again near and above the national average. Registered nurses, including advanced practice nurses earned an average hourly wage of $24.61 in MN and $25.58 in the Twin Cities, above the national average of $23.58. These numbers are six years old and according to state of Minnesota and national salary reports, nursing wages have continued to increase over the last 5 years. You can most likely anticipate better wages than those just stated depending on your experience and location.
