Scholarships for Nursing Students in Idaho

Scholarships have two purposes. The first is to serve financially needy college students. By helping qualified students make it through school, scholarships also serve the greater society. Idaho is proactive about helping students pursue professional certifications. The Robert R. Lee Promise Category A. Scholarship is available to high achieving high school seniors who attend eligible professional-technical schools within the state.

This program, sponsored by the Board of Education, is just one of a number of programs that could see you through school. If you are a nursing major, there are many other sources of scholarships. In many cases, it doesn’t matter whether you graduated from high school last year or two decades back. The reason for the generosity? Idaho needs nurses — high quality ones. Nursing scholarships in Idaho are offered through hospitals, schools, private foundations, and governmental agencies.

Basic Nursing Scholarship Requirements

Several private foundations administer scholarships for nursing students. The Idaho Community Foundation offers the Idaho Nursing Fund Scholarship. Priority is given to students who have financial need and are in the top third of their class academically. Your application packet should include three copies of all required materials: application form, transcripts, references letters, essay, and a copy of your FAFSA report. The subject of the essay is your motivation for selecting the nursing profession. Make sure to have everything in by April 1.

The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Idaho offers a nursing scholarship for students who are veterans or have a parent or grandparent who is a veteran. To be eligible, you must be between 17 and 35. The application is a little different depending on whether you are a traditional or a nontraditional student. If you are traditional, you must have a good academic record; if nontraditional, your work record is more important. Your application, including cover letter and references, should be submitted by May 15.

Idaho’s hospitals are another potential scholarship source. Gritman Medical Center in Moscow administers several scholarships for students in the surrounding counties. Some are open only to graduating high school seniors. The Midge Presol Scholarship and the Maurine Cherrington Scholarship, though, are open to other students.

Other hospitals offer scholarships to their employees to help with career mobility — e.g. to allow them to advance from RN to BSN status. Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, for example, offers both scholarships and tuition reimbursement programs.

Your college or university may also administer scholarships for nursing students and other allied health professionals. At Idaho State University, for instance, you find the Albertson’s Foundation Division of Health Sciences Scholarship; this award is for students who plan to provide health services to schoolchildren. There are also a number of ISU scholarships specifically for nursing students.

The Idaho government provides loan scholarships, which do not require monetary payment as long as you fulfill a service obligation after graduation. The Education Incentive Loan Forgiveness Program is for Idaho’s future nurses and teachers. Eligibility requirements include a 3.0 GPA and status as a full-time student at an Idaho institution.

Nursing Scholarship Expert Tips

Idaho has many nursing scholarships, but many have very specific eligibility requirements. A big part of the process is finding the most appropriate ones to apply for. Academic excellence can be an asset, but you don’t have to be an A student to win a scholarship. In some competitions, you are not only a potential scholarship recipient but a future employee. Volunteering and professional memberships can give you credibility. For some candidates, the interview is a chance to shine. Realize that just by making sure that your application packet is complete, you will be ahead of many applicants.
