Organizations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) have stated that they recognize the BSN should be the minimum educational requirement for a registered nurse to practice. Many of the Magnet hospitals and learning hospitals feel the same way, preferring to hire baccalaureate educated nurses.

It is not always the case that a BSN educated nurse will make more than an ADN or Diploma educated nurse. However, according to the Advance for Nurses 2009 Salary Survey, in the state of North Carolina BSN educated nurses do make more than diploma and associate’s educated nurses. The Salary Survey found that BSN educated nurses made a median hourly rate of $28.78 while ADN educated nurses made a median hourly rate of $26.32 and diploma educated nurses made a median hourly rate of $25.46.

Though nursing shortages are plaguing most of the country including North Carolina, competitiveness for the registered nursing positions at the better paying facilities is high. Higher educated nursing professionals most always have an advantage for the management and other leadership positions and with these positions often comes greater responsibility, but also higher pay. According to the Advance for Nurses Salary Survey, 34% of working RNs in North Carolina hold a BSN, 34.7% hold an ADN and 9.6% hold a diploma.

RN to BSN Online Programs Offered in North Carolina

ADN and diploma educated nurses all have an opportunity to get their BSN by completing an RN to BSN program to stay competitive in the job market. Often the RN to BSN online programs can be completed in as little as 12 months. This means a registered nurse can actually continue working and pursue higher education that will help them move up the nursing career ladder, often resulting in greater earnings.
