Michigan Nurse Practitioner Programs
There are a variety of nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist programs to choose from in the state of Michigan including online program formats. The online format offers flexibility that is not always an option in a campus based format. Practicum requirements for online programs are the same and in most cases clinical sites can be arranged in the student’s local community or region. Curriculum is identical or nearly identical to that of campus based nurse practitioner programs as is required to maintain CCNE or NLNAC accreditation of the program. Accreditation is an important factor in selecting an NP program. It offers the student confidence that the program will adequately prepare them for national certification, certification by the MDCH – Michigan Board of Nursing and to practice as an advanced practice nurse. Learn more about the admissions requirements, application process and more by contacting the nurse practitioner programs offered in Michigan and listed below.
Currently, the national credentialing/certification bodies for nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists require that applicants hold a master’s, doctorate or post-master’s certificate in the nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist specialty that they plan to take the exam for. So, if you have your baccalaureate degree in nursing you will need to enroll in a master’s nursing program that offers a nurse practitioner concentration. Or, if you hold an associate’s or diploma in nursing and intend on pursuing an RN to MSN program with a nurse practitioner concentration you will be eligible for national certification upon completion of the program.
Upon Graduation from a formal advanced education program for nurse practitioners offered in Michigan, graduates will be eligible for certification in their respective specialty through one of the national certification bodies. National certification is one of the requirements that the Michigan Department of Community Health Board of Nursing has for becoming a Certified Nurse Practitioner in Michigan. The Board of Nursing also requires that applicants for certification as a nurse practitioner hold a current registered nursing license and have a bachelor’s degree or higher and have completed a formal advanced program for nurse practitioners.
